Technique "True values"

It often happens so, that an individual has some difficulties in defining what or who is the most important & valuable for him.

Value - something that is very important for every person in particular & for society in general. They can be either material or spiritual.

It often happens so, that an individual has some difficulties in defining what or who is the most important & valuable for him. The exercise below is aimed at clarifying this. What you (or your client) has to do is as follows:

1. At small pieces of paper (stickers) write down twenty things or people that you think are important & valuable. Each person/thing - on a separate piece of paper.

2. Arrange the points according to their importance/value.

3. Now, please, remove fifteen of them. Only five things should remain.

4. Arrange them according to their importance/value.

5. And remove two more stickers!

The three stickers with written values that are left - are the most important & valuable for you.

Please, discuss at each step with the client - why he made such choices. When he makes the initial list, he should disclose it & explain each point.
Then he should comment on his choice when he removes 15 stickers.
The same is in the last step, but the values left should be discussed in more details: why he left these three, what they mean for the client, what might happen if he does not have them any more, did he want to choose the other values, why did not choose then, etc...

Usually, at the very first step, the clients feel a strong inner resistance because they cannot "squeeze" everything they have in just twenty points.

In my practice, I saw many various things in such lists. For instance, one person may see the value in a high position. And another person considers valuable a rare book of 19th century...
That's why it seems difficult to get rid of all the "luggage" & remove stickers from the initial list.

By the way, the last step often goes with a minimum of resistance.

Despite the fact that this technique rather seems tough, it has a "sobering effect"... when the client realizes that he has a limited choice & that he should [freewillingly] get rid of something important, he makes more conscious choices.
